WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MARINE CLEAT MATERIALS?
While you will occasionally find cast iron and chrome-plated zinc options, typically standard style marine boat cleats come in one of three materials: nylon, galvanized metal/aluminum or stainless steel. Nylon dock cleats are an affordable and sturdy option. While not as aesthetically pleasing as other materials, galvanized metal and aluminum dock cleats also offer affordable reliability. And stainless-steel dock cleats offer the most reliability (at a price), won't rust and are practically impossible to break.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PULL-UP AND FLIP-UP DOCK CLEATS?
Two of the more popular styles of marine boat cleats, pull-up and flip-up cleats are strong, safe and convenient — but what is the difference between them? Pull-up dock cleats are placed on your boat to tie off on the dock and aren't directly attached to the dock. They can be neatly put down when not in use. However, they can be quite expensive and difficult to install. Flip-up dock cleats, also known as folding cleats, can also be put down flush when not in use, but are more affordable and easier to install. And in addition to docks, they can also be installed on watercraft, like bass boats.
DO BOAT DOCK CLEATS NEED TO BE MAINTAINED?
Yes. Over time, boat dock cleats can become worn or damaged. Because of this, it's important to inspect marine cleats during each post-trip inspection. If your marine cleat is on its last leg or simply doesn't secure your boat as you need it to, consider upgrading to a stronger stainless-steel option for increased mooring security.
