7 Benefits of a Thermoelectric Cooler and Warmer

Thermoelectric coolers and warmers are popular among boat owners, RVers, adventurers and more. Unlike simple ice chests, they are powered by electricity in order to keep things either cool or warm. Keep reading to discover some of the top benefits that come with choosing thermoelectric cooler and warmer products from Boat & RV Accessories.

1. Can Chill and Heat

The biggest and best advantage of a thermoelectric cooler and warmer is its ability to (as the name entails) both heat and cool the interior of the unit. This provides greater flexibility when you travel, allowing you to store different foods and drinks. Plus, it's eco-friendlier since thermoelectric cooler and warmer products don't contain any CFC refrigerants.

How Does a Thermoelectric Cooler Work?

So, what is thermoelectric cooling and how does it differ from that of a traditional cooler or refrigerator? A thermoelectric cooler and warmer is powered by electricity and can be run in reverse. What this means is you can both heat and cool your food. This is perfect for storing cold drinks, transporting hot dishes or keeping food warm for a short period of time.

Inside each thermoelectric cooler and warmer is a Peltier plate. This component uses a scientific principle first discovered by French physicist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier in the 1840s. He found that heating or cooling could be achieved when an electric current is forced through two dissimilar conductors.

When used in a portable thermoelectric cooler and warmer, a Peltier plate typically consumes 3-5 amps and is capable of temperatures that are around 40℉ lower than that of the ambient temperature. So, keep in mind that unlike refrigerators, most thermoelectric coolers aren't temperature controlled and are only capable of differential cooling — the warmer it is outside, the warmer your cooler will be inside.

2. Takes Up Less Space

As we've already touched on, each thermoelectric cooler and warmer contains a Peltier plate that cools the appliance. Its small size is what allows for the cooler's compact and portable design, but it's also what contributes to its roomy interior space. Because of the cooler/warmer's compactness, it can easily fit on boats, in small trunks or behind car seats. Plus, it's super lightweight, so you can carry it wherever your adventures take you.

3. Long Operational Life

Because a portable thermoelectric cooler and warmer has very few if any moving parts, there are fewer components that can break. Thus, these coolers require little to no maintenance and are much more durable than a traditional refrigerator or ice chest.

The only thing to keep in mind is that a thermoelectric cooler and warmer does contain a fan that circulates outside air across the Peltier plate. This fan can wear out, but as long as it is functional, your thermoelectric cooler should function as normal. At some point, the Peltier plate may wear out as well, but this shouldn't happen for a very long time. In fact, if you only use your cooler for the occasional camping or boating trip, you may never have to replace the plate.

4. Rugged and Reliable

As we've mentioned, a thermoelectric cooler and warmer doesn't contain many moving parts. Because of this, it can be dropped, kicked and jostled around without any risk of damage. While we know that you're not planning to kick or wrestle your cooler, accidents do happen, and it's good to know that your thermoelectric cooler and warmer can withstand whatever is thrown its way.

5. Affordable

A thermoelectric cooler and warmer costs way less than a traditional refrigerator and even some portable coolers. And because it has a longer and more reliable operating life, a thermoelectric cooler and warmer can actually continue to save you money over time.

6. Runs Quietly

Again, as there are no moving parts in a thermoelectric cooler and warmer, it typically runs with significantly less noise. While on the surface this doesn't seem like a big deal, it can be a huge benefit when you're in a small space like a boat or car and want to listen to music, have a conversation or enjoy the sweet sounds of nature.

7. Heavily Insulated

Just like traditional coolers, a portable thermoelectric cooler and warmer is heavily insulated. Cold food stored within the cooler will stay cold for a few hours, even without power, as long as the lid is closed. It's always a good idea to purchase a digital cooking thermometer with a remote probe to ensure your food isn't getting too hot or too cold when stored in your thermoelectric cooler and warmer.
