Summer boating safety tips

Ready to get on the water this summer? Boat & RV Accessories recommends these summer safety tips to keep the trip safe and enjoyable.

We understand the excitement of summer boating season. We wait patiently through winter and the early days of spring so that we can get our boats back on the water.

The summer season reminds us that we are not the only ones who got the idea to go boating. Lakes, marinas and more get filled up quickly with boaters and adventurers who love the water just as much as you. Keeping these safety tips in mind will keep everyone safe, so you can enjoy many more wonderful days on the water.

Training

Use the downtime to ensure your skills as a boater are at their best. A boating class is never a bad idea, and you can easily get more familiar with your boat's systems and equipment.

Update Equipment

The off-season is also a good time to upgrade your boat's tools and systems. If your boat is not yet equipped with an engine cut off switch, for instance (a 2021 federal law made these mandatory), make sure you have such upgrades for the summer.

Life Jackets

The data is clear: Life jackets save lives. Ensure you have enough for everyone on your boat, and that they keep them on while you are traveling.

Float Plan

Pilots file flight plans, so why not file a float plan for your adventure? Send a rough timeline, map, passenger list and itinerary to a friend or the marina. In case an accident happens, and you don't have communication, someone will know where to look.

Eye on The Skies

Weather can be surprising, but thanks to technological developments, it is predictable. Some of the worst boating disasters have been a result of poor weather planning, so don't let that happen to you. Before you go out, check the weather report for a general outlook. As you enjoy the trip, keep an eye on the skies, and if something looks ominous, use a weather radio or radar app to determine what's going on.

Prepare for Crowds

When you hit the road with your boat in tow, you should already know what to expect in terms of crowds. Summer has plenty of holidays that draw large amounts of people to the water. That means you'll have to be even more vigilant than usual. Obey water navigation standards, respect no-wake zones and speed limits, and drive defensively.

Pick Your Places Carefully

Based on holidays, your skill level and weather conditions, a favorite boating spot may not be a good idea. Consider calling an audible to an area that's not as congested if you know crowds are going to be an issue.

Avoid Alcohol

Adult beverages are fine for passengers of legal age, but not for the captain. The hot temperatures already sap away your energy and hydration, and alcohol can exacerbate that fatigue.
